A stenographer accurately record all court proceedings using shorthand or specialized equipment, then transcribe these notes into official, verbatim records (transcripts) for judges, lawyers, and parties, ensuring a complete legal record for appeals and future reference, with duties including attending sessions, delivering notes, preparing transcripts for a fee, and providing clerical assistance.
Key Responsibilities
- Transcription:
Transcribe stenographic notes into final, written form (transcripts) for judges, parties, or records.
- Note Submission:
Immediately deliver notes to the Clerk of Court after each session for attachment to the case record.
- Providing Transcripts:
Furnish transcripts to requesting parties, charging mandated fees (e.g., per 100 words).
- Clerical Duties:
May also perform typing, filing, and general clerical tasks for the judge or office.
- Reading Back:
Read back portions of testimony as requested by the court or parties.
- Recording Proceedings:
Attend court sessions, pre-trial conferences, and take down all spoken words, rulings, and charges in stenographic notes.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree (preferably a graduate of Office Management)
- Career Service (Sub-Professional) First Level Eligibility
- Good communication and writing skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, MS Outlook)
