Summary of Work Activities and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Textbook Section Head, the Junior Editor provides support in carrying out editorial and research responsibilities to facilitate the publication of textbooks by the University Press.
This position also collaborates with authors, book-cover designers, manuscript reviewers, and other contributors involved in the publication process.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
I. Editorial and Production Support
- Reviews and edits manuscripts and other copies for publication (e.g., scholarly works, textbooks, literary titles, and other product lines)
- Performs mechanical and substantial copyediting on manuscripts
- Formats content and front and back matters of manuscripts
- Reviews blueprints/proofs before final book printing
- Conducts research to verify manuscript information
- Tracks the status of submitted manuscripts throughout each production stage and provides updates to the Section Head
- Works with authors and artists on manuscript productions
- Coordinates with authors on editorial, design, and production aspects of the publication process, including necessary revisions
- Collaborates with cover designers and layout artists in the production of a manuscript into a book
- Provides supplementary layout work and book designs, as needed
- Promotes new titles by writing book descriptions that provide content overview to the readers
- Catalogs new titles and handles the application process for International Standard Book Number (ISBN), barcodes, and Cataloging in Publication record (CIP) data with the National Library, and submits to Section Head for endorsement
II. Section Support
- Keeps abreast of editorial standards, design and production technologies, and publication, research, and book production trends that may affect the University
- Assists the Section Head in benchmarking industry and general community methods and in researching innovative editorial and production systems
- Oversees and mentors interns on editorial work, including the editorial process, copyediting, and proofreading tasks
- Coordinates with the other Sections for essential editorial and publication matters (e.g., production schedules and printing deadlines, promotion, etc.)
III. Performs all other tasks assigned by the immediate supervisor and authorized representatives
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Language Proficiency: Demonstrates a strong command of English and Filipino languages, including the ability to identify good grammar, precise word choice, and knowledge of various style guides, especially the Chicago Manual of Style
- Editorial Skills: Ability to effectively review content, make corrections, and provide feedback and improvement; Exhibits strong proficiency in writing, storytelling, proofreading, research, grammar, and vocabulary
- Copywriting Skills: Ability to write text, or copy, used in marketing and promotional materials, as well as cataloging new titles and related materials
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Coordination Skills: Ability to proactively coordinate, mediate, and manage actions in relation to others
- Decision-Making Skills: Ability to make informed decisions based on relevant information and data, taking into consideration multiple viewpoints
- Technological Savvy: Proficient in Microsoft Office, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
- Organizational Skills: Ability to use one’s time and resources efficiently and effectively
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Humanities or Social Sciences
- Master’s degree units (Thesis-track), an advantage
- At least 3 years of related work experience as a copy editor/editorial assistant in publications in the Humanities and Social Sciences
- Work experience in project management is an advantage
